    Hello Ron,

I restarted the 1676 build this evening – after 1 hr it still hadn’t completed the startup or enabled the web browser access. The trace looks like it thought the startup took about 2 minutes, but the firefly pane of the system prefs thought it was still starting… At 20:29 hrs I ran the “quit firefly” script and reinstalled build 1586.

Below is the level zero debug trace:

Okay. Didn’t show up on the network, like in iTunes though?

Correct – it doesn’t appear in the network – neither my Roku Soundbridge nor iTunes on my other Macs can see it and it doesn’t appear in Bonjour in Safari.

Build 1586 appears in all these about 1-2 minutes after starting.

So does this — after two minutes it says it’s registered the multicast addresses. Wonder what’s different?

    Ron,
when I switch from one version to the other I am doing that by running the “quit firefly” script and the then clicking on the new firefly preferences pane to install it. Is that right or were there some changes between the builds which mean that I need to run the uninstall script or even manually delete some files between 1586 and 1676?
    ciao John

Shouldn’t really even need to run the quit firefly script. Should be able to stop it from the panel and then click to install.

In fact, maybe that’s the issue. Might be the stop script kills it without unregistering mdns or something, causing the registration to fail.

Try stopping it from the panel and then installing.

Failing that (just for grins), try rebooting with the new version installed.

I’d be interested in what the results were.

OK. I tried what what you suggested, but it didn’t help. Here are the level zero logs, this time using build 1677:

    1. First attempt (stop with pref-panel and install new prefs):

    2007-10-21 07:37:41 (a000ed88): Firefly Version svn-1677: Starting with debuglevel 0

    2007-10-21 07:38:42 (01a28400): Error: enum_begin failed (error 1): ?

    2. Try a full scan from the browser interface (not having rebooted, this just the next lines in the log above):

    2007-10-21 07:41:53 (019b9400): Error: enum_begin failed (error 1): ?

    3. Reboot the server:

    2007-10-21 07:45:51 (a000ed88): Initializing database
    2007-10-21 07:46:04 (a000ed88): Starting web server from /Library/PreferencePanes/Firefly.prefPane/Contents/Resources/Firefly Helper.app/Contents/Resources/Server/admin-root on port 0

    2007-10-21 07:46:06 (a000ed88): Serving 10507 songs. Startup complete in 15 seconds
    2007-10-21 07:46:06 (a000ed88): Rescanning database

    2007-10-21 08:31:45 (a000ed88): Updating playlists
    2007-10-21 08:31:49 (a000ed88): Scanned 12666 songs (was 10507) in 2743 seconds

The last log might look OK, but although firefly apparently did a full re-scan taking 45 mins, it never became visible on the network. 🙁
(I only noticed when posting this, that the 3rd block doesn’t list the build number – I thought I had copied the whole log, but it looks like I missed the first line or two?)

Reinstalling build 1586 (using the quit script without rebooting) restores everything back to a working state. And firefly becomes visible on the network almost as soon as the rescan starts.
    /John

    Crap… why can’t I repro this?

You said this was 10.4.latest, right? And ppc?

In the web config, does it say it’s using sqlite, or sqlite3?

Yup – 10.4.10 on a 1.25 GHz PPC Mac mini. The mini is basically just serving my MP3s and running a couple of USB harddisks which I back up to, so there’s hardly any other software on it other than what comes with OS X.

It says it’s using sqlite in the config in the web config. What do you recommend? Basically, I just installed firefly yonks ago and update it when I think the version number is getting a bit far ahead of my version. Would I need to install anything to switch to sqlite3, and would you like me to try?

I’ll mail you the full existing config file in case anything in it is set up wrong…

I didn’t see anything there. otoh, I’m going to be redoing the database stuff pretty severely now that stuff seems to be more stable (ish). So who knows, it might just disappear by itself as a consequence of lots of the db code disappearing.
