no files listed in share

i just installed 1586 (aptitude install) on ubuntu 7.10.
i can see the share in itunes, but there are no songs in it.
couple of things seem wrong, but not sure if they’re related:

1. i get the error 500 in the web interface.

2. i get the Warning: mt-daapd uses the HOWL compat layer of AVAHI

my -d 9 output was too large to post, so if it’s relevant, if someone could tell me what i’m looking for then i’ll post that.
