Since the new soundbridge beta supports apple lossless I decided to play with it a bit. I converted some flac files to m4a using dbpoweramp and rescanned. They show up in itunes and on the soundbridge as apple lossless. When I play them on itunes nothing happens – counter stays stuck at 0 and the log says:

    2006-12-24 09:56:22 (b5c2bba0): Session 0: Streaming file ’01 – 100 Years.m4a’ to 192.168.2.19 (offset 0)

When I play a song on the soundbridge there is a long pause then it plays and the log says:

    That’s a “not fast-start enabled” issue.

There are a couple forum topics about that. Lemme look for them.

Looks like it either doesn’t like the metainfo, or it’s not decoding it properly. I’d post that on the roku forum and see if RokuMike would take a look at it. I think he’s on vacation for another week or so, though.

Do you have an iTunes created one you could test with?

posted on the roku beta forum …

I’ll poke around for an itunes encoded file and report back:

report is that itunes encoded file works fine both using itunes client and soundbridge. Does seem to be a tag related issue with soundbridge

If I transcode flac->alac using max and then add the fast start tag info using mp3tag I have the same problem, works in itunes not soundbridge

I have a Roku Soundbridge 1001 running 2.7 beta 4 with a NSLU2 running unslung 6.8 beta running firefly svn 1643 from Dec 17 nightly build. I am serving apple lossless files to my soundbridge with no problems some of my songs were ripped using iTunes 7.02.16 others were ripped using dbpoweramp. I have firefly configured to not transcode ALAC I have used this setup with both wired and wireless connections and it works fine only problem I have is after about 4 hours of playing the soundbridge will stop playback when you try to start playback again it will play 1 song then the Soundbridge will reboot. After the reboot you can select the play list again and it will start playing again for about another 4 hours. I do not know if the problem with the playback stopping is with firefly or the soundbridge I hope to try using Itunes this weekend to serve the soundbridge and see if it also stops playback after aprox 4 hours.

That actually won’t test the same stuff… serving iTunes it uses daap, not rsp, while when connected to firefly it uses rsp.

If the soundbridge reboots, though, there is definitely a soundbridge problem of some sort.

Well I tried the Itunes serving apple lossless last night and same problem with the Soundbridge stopping playback after 4 plus hours and start playing the next song and it plays fine but when the next one on the list tries to start the Soundbridge reboots so its not a firefly problem with apple lossless which I did not think it was in the first place seems there is some problem with the 2.7 beta 4 software and apple lossless. But 4 plus hours between problems is not that bad is usable.

I’ve continued to play around with this and there does seem to be a mt-daapd specific problem in addition to problems with alac files produced with some programs. I am now running svn-1498 and soundbridge 2.7beta 7. There is a program called Omni Encoder (see hydrogenaudio) which uses itunes to encode alac and aac into m4a files and to write the tags. The resulting file will stream to itunes or a soundbridge when served by itunes. When served by mt-daapd it works fine to itunes but croaks ( Write error: Broken pipe) with the soundbridge – perhaps an rsp problem.

    For a sample file see:

It is rsp. If I delete the rsp plugins to force daap then I can stream alac to the soundbridge no problem (once the m4a files are fast start enabled using mp4creator).

By the way daap from svn-1498 to the latest soundbridge beta is all messed up browsing generates a whole bunch of empty albums – in addition to the albums for the artist you are browsing to.

I’m not sure what you mean. Can you describe this more?

There are two separate problems with alac and the soundbridge. The first is that you must have a fast start enabled m4a file which some programs do not produce (e.g. dbpoweramp). You can run mp4creator -optimize -H=1 filename.m4a to add the needed info to a file.

An alac file which has fast start info will stream from iTunes->iTunes, from iTunes-Roku, and firefly->Roku via daap. It does not work firefly->Roku via rsp (at least for m4a’s produced by dbpoweramp+mp4creator, max, and omni encoder which uses iTunes to write alac. I have verifed this by running two separate instances of firefly svn-1498. One has the rsp plugins removed from the plugin directory forcing daap, the other has the daap plugins removed so rsp is used. They both read the same files on the server. The daap one streams alac to Roku just fine. The rsp version fails on each file with error message:

    Write error: Broken pipe

The simple solution would be to just use daap however the combination of the current Roku beta and svn-1498 doesn’t browse very well – as an example browse artist gives you a list of every single album in the database with only those corresponding to the artist you selected having any songs once you go down the next level. i.e. rsp browses fine but doesn’t play the native alac and daap plays the files but has messed up browsing.

Hope this is clear – I’ve confused myself numerous times trying to isolate the alac problem. The URL I posted above links to a file that behaves this way.

That’s almost certainly a roku issue, but I can’t for the life of me figure out why it wouldn’t work. Certainly the alac playback would be the same for both the iTunes and the rsp stream.

    Strange.

as an example browse artist gives you a list of every single album in the database with only those corresponding to the artist you selected having any songs once you go down the next level.

This is what I’m not understanding. You mean when you pick “artist” then it shows all albums, not just the albums for that artist?

Exactly – all albums are shown but only the ones for the artist you selected have any songs in them.

One other peculiar thing. If I scan the files before doing the fast start correct to the alac files and then use mp4creator to optimize them I can play the songs via rsp as long as I don’t rescan. This seems to depend a bit on which transcoder and I haven’t fully explored the systematics so it may be a red herring.
