Wrong IP, that was it – thanks Ron!
While the Airport express had a correct IP on the wired ethernet side, it had NAT enabled on the WLAN side and thus wasn’t in the same net.
I had had it right before my eyes but didn’t draw the final conclusion – setting IP manually solved the problem.
