I think I have it figured out if anyone is curious.
My linux box is running as a samba server as well. The problem was that it wasn’t allowing guest to connect. So all I had to do was configure smb.conf to allow guests, and then configure permissions for the media share so that guests were read only, and then front row started seeing it again.
