and the newer

 vendor string: reference libFLAC 1.2.1 20070917

EDIT: I might also add that the .flac files causing trouble are perfectly playable in e.g. amarok

I actually think iirc it’s to do with cover art.

Well, that’s only partly true.. that and flac command-line executable for flac, I think.
