    Hello community,

    I’m 90 % happy user of FMS. However, there are few issues that I need to ask you. I’ve got 7000 files in my database (Ubuntu 8.04 server/svn-1696), most of them are FLAC files. The problem is some of them don’t play. I’ve enabled log level to 9 so that you are able to see everything.

    Please see the attachment. What I did in Rhythmbox was:
    1) connecting and obtaining the database into Rhythmbox
    2) selecting John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers With Eric Clapton, selecting first song
    3) song is going to play, but it never will. I’ve tried to wait for few minutes and it doesn’t help (I’m connected through ethernet)

    4) killall mt-daapd and creating this output.txt:
    http://michal.penka.name/output.txt

    I’ve got these problems often, for e.g. Mike Oldfield’s 1971 FLAC demos – strange thing there is that only very long (20+ minutes) files don? play. Normal one’s of this album (like 3-6 minutes) play without any problem. Mike Oldfield’s problem isn’t in log attached though.

    Thank you for any help – I really appreciate it!

    I’m also at jabber/e-amil: michal [_a_t_] penka [_d_o_t_] name

    One more thing – I’ve tried to set:

    never_transcode = flac

    and it works, but for just for a few of these problematic FLACs. For e.g. now I’m able to play some Cream’s albums. Mike Oldfield’s demos and John Mayall’s playback now behave different. It doesn’t wait for anything like before – it immediately switches to following song and displays a red “driving ban” sign (not found?) next to each song.

    the log now changes to:
    http://michal.penka.name/output2.txt

    Any ideas? Thank you!

    Compare a problematic file with a non-problematic one and see how they differ. It’s possible one file is a raw FLAC stream and the other is a FLAC stream in an OGG container.

    ffmpeg’s handling of FLAC files sucks, and both types must be treated differently. Raw FLAC streams are what is commonly referred to as a FLAC file, FLAC in OGG is not that common.

    It could also be an encoder problem with files produced by older/buggy encoders.

    Thank you for your answer!

    Is there any simple way (in terminal) how to check whether it is raw flac or flac/ogg? But I think flac/ogg would me “smaller” in MBs than raw flac. I think this isn’t my problem.

    However, I’ve tried to re-convert some files again with program called SoundConverter 1.4.1 (GNOME application) which seems to work for me (Mayall, Cream and Oldfield in Rhythmbox/DAAP), but I have to keep

    never_transcode = flac

    which is unpleasant for itunes users in my network I think.

    Do you have any idea where’s the problem?

    Thank you again!

    Just running file on the files should tell you, IIRC.

    Ever heard of file(1)? πŸ™‚

    For reference, this is the output I get on two FLAC files, one being a raw FLAC stream and the other being FLAC-in-OGG:

    testfiles% file When I Grow Up.*
    When I Grow Up.flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 44.1 kHz, 9062784 samples
    When I Grow Up.ogg: Ogg data

    Thanks! It makes sense now πŸ˜€

    However, there is output of problematic file:

    1 - Intro.flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 44.1 kHz, 2299080 samples

    It seems it’s normal FLAC. In Rhythmbox it shows red sign and skips it immediately. Maybe initial encoding was wrong?

    Can you make the problematic files available? The very long one and one of the other files that don’t play should be enough to find out what’s going on.

    I have ideas for both of the issues you’re encountering (as I think there are 2 separate issues), but it’s going to be waaaaaaay faster if I can just test that out myself πŸ™‚
